60The Issue of free press
Free press and it's brother free speech is something that in western society's is highly valued and is one of our core beliefs. it allows citizens to search for knowledge, stay informed, and allows them to voice hopefully educated opinions on what they think should happen in the world both domestic and foreign--though in the modern world economy domestic and foreign often blend together. ignorance causes fear, fear causes chaos which in turn hurts the economy (because realistically, everything effects the economy one way or another especially in the cash driven consumer world we live in), culture and life styles that we have come accustom to live. IF more people were informed of the pit falls of the sub prim mortgages would the housing market be suffering as it is today? common sense says that people would of avoided those risky investments.
There are two types of citizens in my opinion the Educated and the Mob citizen. the educated cares about what is happening outside of his or her normal daily events such as illegal nuclear proliferation in the eastern edges of the world. The Mob citizen only cares that there is food on their table and money in their pocket, a harder task than manny would think. so how do the educated become educated and raise them selfs form the status of a Mob citizen? Well other than the Obvious(College) mass media is the main way that people gain information and more specifically 24 hour news, news papers and internet sites similar to this one. But then how do these providers of information gain the fodder to create their story's? well they do so through investigative journalism.
investigative journalism, when done accurately and ethically, provides the fodder for the constant flow of info into the mass media that in turn constantly consumed. However, it is dangerous to be a journalist, immediate examples of this can be seen in Iran and more recently in North Korea with the journalist that were trying to inform the public of human trafficking that was happening on the korean border; these are just two examples out of many when journalist were kidnapped, tortured, or killed. The public must support these journalist and push for all means to save them when they fall into harms way! These people, who are risking there life so we can know what is happening in the world, represent our the values of free speech and freedom of press and all those who attack them are attacking the very nature of the people of western society.

The sentencing of two American journalists to hard labor in North Korea is part of a pattern the world has seen in dealings with the secretive Communist regime: outside political factors often influence how such incarcerations are resolved.

I'm wondering what type of force you're referring to. (I don't feel comfortable guessing.) So that I can answer the poll below. Great facts and ideas presented in this hub. A few weeks back there was the issue with the Mexican reporter, I heard about it on NPR. His life was threatened. Did you catch wind of that? He asked for help from the US. I'll have to go back and check it out again to refresh my memory.
